Rowney re-signs with AHL Penguins

Sexsmith product Carter Rowney has re-signed with the American Hockey League’s Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins.

The 26-year-old centre, who grew up playing minor hockey in Grande Prairie and suited up with the Junior A Storm from 2006-2009, signed an AHL contract with the Penguins – the Pittsburgh Penguins’ affiliate –  for the 2015-2016 season, earlier this week.

After playing for the Storm, Rowney suited up for four seasons (2009-2013) with the University of North Dakota, collecting 73 points (32 goals and 41 assists) in 150 games.

He helped lead the team to three consecutive Western Collegiate Hockey Association championships.

In 2013, Rowney signed an Amateur Try-Out contract with the Abbotsford Heat – the affiliate of the NHL’s Calgary Flames – and tallied one goal in four games.

Rowney’s first AHL goal came against the Toronto Marlies on April 14, 2013. He eventually returned to school after a 14-day, four-game Amateur Try-Out with the Heat.

Then, in 2013-2014, he signed as a free agent with the AHL’s Penguins and split time between the AHL and East Coast Hockey League’s Wheeling Nailers.

Rowney recorded two goals and two assists in 24 games with the Pens and suited up in 39 games with the Nailers, recording 13 goals and 31 assists.

The past season, he started with the Nailers, recording one goal and six assists in five games, before being recalled on Nov. 5, 2014, to the Penguins.

Rowney tallied 10 goals and 21 assists in 63 games, finishing seventh in Penguins’ scoring.

In the AHL Calder Cup Playoffs, Rowney record two goals and two assists.

The Penguins were eventually ousted in the second round by the Manchester Monarchs – the affiliate of the Los Angeles Kings and eventual Calder Cup champions.

Rowney played under head coach John Hynes and assistant coach Alain Nasreddine with the Penguins.

Hynes and Nasreddine have kept the same coaching titles, but are now with the NHL’s New Jersey Devils.
