In just a few weeks, Grande Prairie will be hosting the annual Fostering Diverse Communities Conference right at our own Stonebridge Hotel!
The conference is an important event as it focuses on methods Alberta cities can implement to make their communities more inclusive. The event will attract representatives from Alberta municipalities, businesses and non-profit organizations.
The conference was first put in motion when Tymmarah Zehr, former committee member of Welcoming and Inclusive Communities (WIC) teamed up with The City’s Community Social Development and offered to host the momentous event.
Zehr says she has “worked closely with the City and the WIC Committee to create an agenda that is responsive to local issues and interests.”
The keynote speaker of the event will be Zarqa Nawaz creator of the popular show Little Mosque on the Prairie. There will also be a presentation by the Alberta Urban Municipalities Association who will be speaking about their ideas on how to further incorporate ethno-cultural communities.
Other highlights include a performance by Ahmed Knowmadic a Somali-Canadian award winning poet and a multicultural gala of cultural performances held on May 1st.
Not only will there be informative presentations, there will also be opportunities for participants to get involved through break out sessions focusing on Aboriginal cultural practices, foreign workers issues, culture shock, community plans, and engaging with people who have experience of being a newcomer to communities.
You can still buy tickets to the event via Eventbrite until April 24th. Students will be offered a discount so don’t forget to bring your student ID if that applies to you!
