Students will have a few more unique opportunities for summer work this year.
On behalf of the Honourable Pierre Poilievre, Minister of Employment and Social Development, Peace River MP Chris Warkentin recently announced $319,219 from Canada Summer Jobs to support the creation of summer positions for students throughout the riding.
“We announce these every spring and really what it is is an opportunity for, number one, young people to get work experience that maybe (they) wouldn’t get otherwise in some great opportunities that are really unique from maybe some of the other jobs that are out there,” said Warkentin. “What we do is we partner with not-for-profits or with service organizations mostly to create job opportunities that really benefit local communities through additional services that these organizations do provide in our communities. Really give an opportunity for young people to give back to their community while giving (students) their first job or summer job that they wouldn’t get otherwise.”
Canada Summer Jobs helps give students the opportunity to gain the skills and experience they will need to be successful while earning money for the coming school year.
The Summer Work Experience, which includes the Canada Summer Jobs program, provides wage subsidies to employers to create summer jobs for secondary and post-secondary students. The funding is provided to non-profit organizations, public-sector employers and small businesses with fewer than 50 employees.
This year, Canada Summer Jobs is expected to create 35,000 across the country.
“I met with young people who have been able to get jobs as a result of this program in previous years and I can tell you that they are just thrilled to have (had) the opportunity to get a job that builds on their resume,” said Warkentin.
“It’s also a great opportunity for these not-for-profits and other groups to get summer students that they wouldn’t be able to afford otherwise so they are able to, in some cases, open their museums longer during the summer or make services available to senior citizens that haven’t been available in the past.”
