Swan City referee Brad Shura has been selected to referee the Keystone Cup in Cold Lake on April 16-19.
Last week, Hockey Alberta announced 25 officials that were selected to work the Keystone Cup (15 officials) and the Esso Cup (10 officials) in Red Deer on April 19-25.
Shura was the lone official from the Peace Country selected to either tournament.
“It’s awesome to get the recognition to get to go to a tournament like this,” said Shura, who refs locally, including Grande Prairie Minor Hockey, North West Junior Hockey League, Alberta Junior Hockey League and North Peace Hockey League games.
“It’s a pretty big tournament because it’s the western championship for junior B. I haven’t really been able to do anything as big as that other than the Mac’s (Midget AAA Hockey Tournament).”
The 28-year-old has been reffing for more than 12 years. He said he has worked the Mac’s tournament three times and noted the Keystone Cup will be the biggest tournament he’s reffed in his career.
He said one of his career highlights was reffing the game between the Canadian Olympic women’s hockey team and the Ernie’s Sports Experts Midget AAA Storm in November 2013 at Revolution Arena, formerly known as the Crystal Centre.
